Feeling lonely and isolated is something we have all coped with at some point. Whether it's because you are embarking on a new stage in your life or the friends you used to see every day have new responsibilities, you might find yourself saying “I have no friends” sometimes. It can be easy to fall into a depressive state when you feel alone, but there is often a reason behind why you feel you have lost some friend suddenly and also some ways to gain and keep friends.

Why Don't You Have Friends?

1

How you act

When you meet new people or are out with your friends, do you feel uncomfortable? Do you often come off as being shy to those who don't really know you? The way you present yourself is the way others will perceive you and will often feel the same towards you. If you feel uncomfortable around people, there is a good chance this makes them feel uncomfortable around you. So try to be a little outgoing next time.

2

Insecurity

If you feel as though you don't fit in with your group of friends, chances are you making yourself stand out. If you have a hard time trusting people, this will also hinder your abilities to make lasting friendships. Constantly putting up walls or barriers so others never get to really know you will make them less interested in actually getting to know you.

3

Introvert or extrovert

Most introverts will find it difficult to make friends simply because they prefer to be alone. Extroverts can also find it difficult to make and keep friends because they are overly social and try to meet many new people.

4

Psychological issues

Feeling uncomfortable when people get too close to you or having a long history of having difficulty maintaining intimate relationships can be one of the reasons you have few friends.

5

Inexperience

Not everyone possesses the social skills to make friends and build strong friendships. No matter how young or old you are, this can be an issue that leaves you thinking “I have no friends”.

6

Your location

Moving to a new location can always leave you feeling a little lonely. Living in an area where there are not many opportunities to meet new people can also have you feeling like you are unable to make friends.

7

Disability

Unfortunately, having a mental or physical disability can cause people to be cruel and avoid you. Depending on the severity of your disability, you might not be able to get out enough to meet more people.

8

Your personality

Sometimes you have to take a long look at yourself to see if you might not be the ideal friend to have. Are you pushy, needy, aggressive or overly confident? All these can be reasons why others stay away from you.

9

Poor communication

You might just not have many friends because you are not easy to get in contact with. If your friends all use one way to communicate with each other, but you don't, such as through social media, and you don't use that form of communication, then you simply are making yourself easy to get a hold of.

10

Don't make time

You might just have too much going on in your life that you don't realize you aren't making the time to make friends or hang out with the ones you have.

Then How to Make and Keep Friends

1

Have patience

Not all friends are going to blossom overnight. When you find yourself saying “I have no friends”, it might be because you aren't investing enough in your relationships. Some relationships take more time to develop so you have to have patience.

2

Opposites attract

You might need to look outside of the typical box when it comes to finding friends. While you may be looking for individuals who have a lot of similarities with you, you could be missing out on some amazing friendships with those who have opposite interest. Look for those who like different things and you will have a whole new experience.

3

Let go

You might be trying to keep a friendship alive but not all of them are worth it. Some friendships will only bring you down and there is no room left to grow. Don't feel bad about ending friendships that are no longer fulfilling.

4

Expand your circle

Don't turn down an opportunity to meet your friend's friends. Chances are if you like your friend, then you are more likely to get along with their other friends. You never know what lasting friendships you can make simply by being open to meeting new people.

5

Life happens

Everyone gets caught up when life gets a little hectic which results in secluding yourself from your friends. When things start to get a little difficult, remember to stay in contact with your friends. Even if you haven't talked to them in a long time, chances are they've been going through something as well that has required all their attention.

6

Let them know you care

One of the things that can lead you to feel as though "I have no friends" can be that you didn't let them know they were important to you. Everyone needs to be reminded that they are appreciated or cared about, so don't neglect to let your friends know what they mean to you.

7

Learn to listen

If you want to get to know those around you better, then you need to learn how to effectively listen. Being a good listener is one of the most important qualities you can have as a good friend.

8

Get out more

Explore more of what you are interested in. Whether it's the museum or bike trail, getting out more and doing more of what you enjoy can lead you to meet some interesting people.

9

Be modest

You don't want to come off as a show off when you first meet someone, so try not to boast about yourself or show off all your excellent skills at once. This can be a huge turnoff to people who will take this negatively.

10

Be yourself

Don't try to fit into a mold of what you think others will like. Be yourself and the right people will come along.
